Are You Experiencing Lower Back Pain?

Check out this video on how back pain is caused.

Are You Experiencing Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints and can range from a mild ache or stiffness to pain that makes everyday movement difficult.

Sometimes back pain begins after a specific event, such as lifting, twisting, falling, or doing something unfamiliar. Other times, it develops gradually without an obvious injury.

Understanding how your pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your movement can help us determine an appropriate approach to care.

What Can Cause Low Back Pain?

Your lower back is made up of bones, joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves that work together to provide movement and support.

Pain can arise from many different structures and circumstances. Common factors may include:

  • Muscle or ligament strains and sprains
  • Joint irritation or restricted movement
  • Disc-related problems
  • Repetitive lifting, bending, or twisting
  • Changes in activity or physical workload
  • Prolonged sitting or other sustained positions
  • Injuries from falls, sports, work, or auto accidents

Sometimes more than one factor contributes to the way your back feels.

What Does Low Back Pain Feel Like?

Low back symptoms can vary considerably from person to person. You may experience:

  • Aching or soreness across the lower back
  • Sharp pain with certain movements
  • Stiffness or restricted movement
  • Muscle tightness or spasm
  • Pain extending into the buttock, hip, or leg
  • Difficulty bending, lifting, sitting, standing, or changing positions

Pain that travels into the leg may involve irritation of a nerve and deserves further evaluation.

Chiropractic Care for Low Back Treatment

Your visit starts with a history and examination to better understand your symptoms, movement, and areas of concern.

When chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may include spinal adjustments, soft-tissue techniques, therapeutic exercise, or other supportive therapies based on your individual needs and examination findings.

We'll also talk with you about movement, activity, and things you can do between visits to support your recovery and return to normal activities.

If your symptoms or examination findings suggest that imaging or additional medical evaluation is appropriate, we'll discuss that with you.
