Sciatica and Leg Pain
Are you experiencing Sciatica?
Sciatica commonly describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve. Symptoms can vary from mild and occasional to persistent or severe and may include pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness.
Because several different problems can cause symptoms that feel like sciatica, an evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
What Causes Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is formed by nerve roots that originate in the lower spine and travel into the lower body. When these nerve roots or the sciatic nerve become irritated or compressed, symptoms may be felt in the lower back, buttock, hip, or leg.
There are several possible causes of sciatic-type symptoms, including changes involving the discs, joints, or surrounding tissues of the lower back. That's why understanding how your symptoms started, where they travel, and what movements or positions affect them is an important part of your evaluation.
Chiropractic care for Sciatica
Your visit starts with a history and examination to better understand your symptoms, movement, and areas of concern. If chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue techniques, therapeutic exercise, or other supportive care based on your individual needs.
If your examination or symptoms suggest that additional medical evaluation or imaging is appropriate, we'll discuss that with you as well.
Tell us promptly if you experience new or worsening numbness, weakness, or significant changes in your symptoms.
